No trains on Christmas Day, almost none on Boxing Day, early finishes on Christmas Eve. Southeastern's 2026 works are not yet out; last year's show the pattern.

National Rail has opened its Christmas and New Year 2026/27 page, and the shape of the fortnight is already fixed: nothing runs on Christmas Day, almost nothing on Boxing Day, and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve finish early on many routes. What is not yet published is the part that matters most for this town: which London terminals and which stretches of the Hastings line Network Rail will close for engineering work between 24 December and 4 January. Last year that announcement came on 17 November. This page carries what is confirmed, last year’s closures as the pattern to expect, and the diary date for the rest.

The quick answer

No National Rail trains on Friday 25 December 2026, and most operators including Southeastern run nothing on Boxing Day. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve services on many routes finish earlier than usual, and on New Year’s Day there are extra overnight trains on London routes (National Rail, covering Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027). Southeastern’s festive engineering work for 2026/27 was not published on 25 September; last year it closed Victoria to Southeastern trains from 27 to 31 December and Charing Cross from 1 to 4 January. Buses: Arriva had not published its Christmas service levels either.

What is confirmed for 2026/27

National Rail’s page sets the frame and says the operator-by-operator detail is to be confirmed (National Rail, Christmas and New Year 2026/27):

  • Thursday 24 December, Christmas Eve: train services on many routes finish earlier than usual. Check that the whole journey, including the last connection, is possible before setting out.
  • Friday 25 December, Christmas Day: no National Rail services anywhere.
  • Saturday 26 December, Boxing Day: most operators run no trains; a limited number run restricted timetables, with details pending.
  • Thursday 31 December, New Year’s Eve: services on certain routes finish earlier than normal.
  • Friday 1 January 2027, New Year’s Day: special overnight services run into the early hours on London area routes.

Outside those days the railway runs a reduced, mostly Saturday or Sunday-style timetable between Christmas and New Year, and that is when the big engineering possessions are taken. National Rail’s page says “a considerable number of engineering and improvement projects” are planned for the period.

Two things about the Tunbridge Wells timetable are already known and sit either side of Christmas. From Monday 14 December the new Southeastern timetable starts, with a weekday Hastings express calling here and half-hourly semi-fast trains to Charing Cross through the day: see our report on the December timetable. And the nine-day Grove Hill Tunnel closure is in October half term, not Christmas: no trains between Tonbridge and Wadhurst from 24 October to 1 November.

Last year’s closures: the pattern to expect

Network Rail announced its Kent and south east London festive works for 2025/26 on Monday 17 November 2025 (Network Rail media centre). These are last year’s dates, not this year’s, but the London end is what closes most years and it is what a Tunbridge Wells passenger runs into.

The Network Rail announcement did not name Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells or the Hastings line, and that is the useful point: in a normal year the line itself stays open over Christmas, and the disruption is at the London terminals. Whether 2026/27 repeats that, or brings something closer to home, is the announcement we are waiting for.

Christmas Eve: check the last train

National Rail’s warning about early finishes is not a formality on this line. In 2022 Southeastern’s last trains from London to all destinations left at midday on Christmas Eve, with everything stopped by 3pm, and on 27 December that year services across the network could not start until midday (Southeastern media centre, 20 December 2022). That was an unusual year, but it shows how far the day can be cut. Do not assume a normal evening service home from London on 24 December until the December timetable is loaded into the journey planner.

Buses

Arriva Kent and Surrey runs the town’s buses. Its Christmas and New Year service levels are published on its website each December and were not up on 25 September (Arriva, Kent and Surrey). We will add the day-by-day levels, and any Boxing Day service, when they appear.

Parking, the tip and the bins

  • Council car parks: on 25 September the borough council’s car parks pages carried no Christmas concession. The standing free periods, the Sunday rules and the evening rules are on our parking page, which will note any festive offer the council announces.
  • The tip at North Farm is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
  • Bins move for the three bank holidays: see Christmas bin collections.
  • Roadworks over the period are tracked on roadworks and travel.

Still to be confirmed, and when

  • Southeastern and Network Rail’s 2026/27 festive works. Last year’s announcement came on 17 November. We will check Southeastern’s planned engineering work page and the Network Rail media centre weekly from the start of November.
  • Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve last trains from Charing Cross, Cannon Street and London Bridge to Tunbridge Wells: expected with the same announcement, or in the journey planner from early December.
  • Arriva’s day-by-day bus levels: expected in December.
  • The Spa Valley Railway’s Polar Express runs from Tunbridge Wells West through December; its dates are in our festive dates list.
